Firefighter Type 2
The Type 2 Firefighter (FFT2) participates in wildland fire operations: ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc. All TNC staff actively participating on a prescribed burn must be qualified as a FFT2. Qualification, Training and Experience Requirements Minimum training and experience required to obtain Firefighter qualification:
To be qualified as a Firefighter Type 2, complete the required courses and training burn. The position task book for FFT2 is optional in most instances. See Midseason FFT2 Training Guide below for one set of circumstances when it is required. The FFT2 task book may be certified by the local burn boss or Fire Manager. Midseason FFT2 Training Guide Many Conservancy fire programs hire seasonal burn crews. These staff are trained to a minimum of FFT2. Due to varying circumstances, a firefighter may leave TNC employment and the program must fill the vacancy after the annual 130/190 training session has occurred. In this instance, the burn boss should follow the Guidelines for Mid-Season Crew Replacement to train the individual to the FFT2 standard. Note that a FFT2 Trainee is not a qualified firefighter and may not substitute for a FFT2 on a prescribed burn unless this substitution is noted and justified in writing on the prescribed burn plan. For example, if a burn plan calls for a minimum crew size of six FFT2 and the burn boss believes the burn can be safely and effectively accomplished with a crew of five FFT2 and one FFT2(T), the burn boss can amend the burn plan with justification for this decision, and sign the amendment. It is strongly recommended that the Fire Manager be consulted on such decisions. See Fire Management Requirement #3 for information on modifying an approved prescribed burn unit plan.
